Apologies about my absence last week. I'll be posting a new entry tomorrow.
NY Photo Fest, graduations, going away parties, photo shoots and the like had me running around for a good amount of time. Things are settling.
I'm happy to get back to work. Stay tuned!

"AMOS is a portrait narrative of our friend Amy, now Amos. It is a celebration and documentation of physical change and an exploration of human sexuality. This ongoing project continues today and is taken within his bedroom apartments in Brooklyn.
We are beginning to explore the use of diptychs within our work, especially with this series. We are a married collaborative team that shoots in tandem, using both medium and large formats. What used to be a singular final image, we are now realizing the importance of separate images taken together and showing them side by side. As a man and woman, two separate individuals, the exchange of emotion between ourselves and our sitters vary between us. This is a beginning of one pairing..."

Truth, narrative, make-believe, fiction, document.
Photography allows for the real and the fantastic to be combined, creating another layer. These three photographs hold that air of mystery for me.

Felt there was a lack of documentary photographers and photo journalists on Wanderlustagraphy. Whenever I look at this kind of work it makes me wish I had the guts to pursue such hard stories. But then again, it's not for all of us. For those of you pursuing such stories or know of somebody that is, get that work over here. I'd love to have it on the site.

All eyes on you.
Ever noticed how photography allows us to stare with such concentration to every detail and beauty of another that you can get lost within the topography of a face or gesture? Portraiture lures me in this way. It allows for the most eloquent staring contest.

Food for thought:
"When you begin a picture, you often make some pretty discoveries. You must be on guard against these. Destroy the thing, do it over several times. In each destroying of a beautiful discovery, the artist does not really suppress it, but rather transforms it, condenses it, makes it more sustainable. What comes out in the end is the result of discarded finds. Otherwise, you become your own connoisseur. I sell myself nothing." - Pablo Picasso (1935)

“In the spring time, the only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing, hey ding a ding;
Sweet lovers love the spring.”
- William Shakespeare
"Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems.”
-Rainer Maria Rilke
These photographs, with their pastel monochromatic palettes, remind me that we are heading towards Spring. Officially it already started... though I'm waiting for the warmth to catch up.

"We do not exist in isolation, yet so many photographs, supposed to be portraits, show us alone. We flow through time and are not frozen as a photograph is frozen. An archetypal analogy for life is the river. If Narcissus were to look at his image in a photograph instead of in a river he would not find a true representation of this process of dynamic change that is himself. The mirrored image changes with us, the photograph does not. "
Taken from 'Apparitions: A Meditation on the Portrait in Photography' by James McArdle an article I stumbled upon and enjoyed that can be found here.
And in other notes I'm posting a heads up that Erik Weeks has a book of portraits of his wife, now out and available to the masses, called "World Was in the Face of the Beloved". One may check it out and/or purchase it at Photo-eye.

Simple observations that resonate.
Like a poetic crime scene: a spray of rose petals... tracks leading to an edge... a flood lamp in the night.
Ps- finally updated the links again!!

Felt it had been a while (maybe not... but I am a portrait fan) since my last straight forward portrait post. Thought these 3 felt good together.
